Catalina had failed. She had had one job to do and she had failed.
This realization was rather clear as she dragged her body out of the sight of passersby. She was bleeding out and there was no saving her. She knew she had only seconds left to live and no one could see her die. She really didn’t need to return in 500 years to find a world where someone had witnessed a spirit of sparks in the shape of a bird rising to the sky from a dead woman’s body. Only Goddess knows what kind of affect that would have on history.
She glanced at her wounds and saw her blood pooling and dripping and oozing and she thought of Thanatos. Usually, he would have already sensed her life essence slipping away, found her and saved her. She would have had more time to finish the job. She should have had more time to finish the job.
“How did they find us so early?” she mused as she found a spot in the alleyway away from prying eyes. By now, things were getting hazy and Catalina no longer had any energy to move a single muscle. “The rest is up to you, Mr. Odin.”
Her last thought was of Thanatos.
“Until next time, my heart.”
